For almost every year of marriage, there are standard
traditional and modern gifts to give your spouse on your anniversary.
These range from clocks to diamonds, and although they represent
tradition and time, they don’t always represent what your marriage
really means to both you and your loved one. So this year, instead of
letting your anniversary become just another holiday, why not give her
something that will remind her of your love for her and all the
wonderful times you’ve had together? Here are some ideas for
personalized mementos of your marriage.
1. Find a gift that is
representative of your name. In most cases, your wife sacrificed her
maiden name to take on yours, an action which is symbolic of her love
for you. Thank her by finding a way to celebrate that name. For
example, for every five years of marriage, a man with the last name of
Fox would give his wife a representation of a fox, such as a small
crystal figurine or a painting, symbolizing who they both were and the
family they had created. If your surname is too unique for this, find
something else that will represent the two of you, like setting up an
appointment to have professional pictures taken so that you have visual
reminders of your life together.
2. As we get older, life gets
busier, and sometimes all you need to do to remind your wife you love
her is to spend some precious time with her. This can be simple, like
going to a romantic restaurant for a long, quiet dinner, followed by an
evening stroll. Or if you want to be a bit more creative, try
re-creating your first date or your marriage proposal. Take her to the
same restaurant or the place where you, and let her know how glad you
are that she said yes!
3. Sign up for a class that you can do
together. Maybe she’s always wished that she had learned to dance, or
paint. Many cities offer some type of community education program.
Check your city’s website or town hall to see what kinds of classes
they offer, and sign up together for it.
4. Plan your anniversary
night as a surprise. Be sure she has no plans for the evening, and be
in charge of deciding where you will go and what you will do. Have
flowers delivered with a note that has instructions on where and when
to meet you; lay out her clothes for her—maybe a fancy evening dress or
just the outfit that you love to see her in. She’ll know by the effort
you’re making how much you appreciate her.
5. Look at your
wedding pictures! After the first few months of marriage these tend to
be put away and forgotten. Pull them out, dust them off, and actually
remember the day that you spent so much time, money, and effort
preparing for! It will bring back laughs and memories. Choose a special
picture before your anniversary and have it framed. Place it in her
office at work or somewhere at home where she will see it often.
The
word “anniversary” is a combination of two root words, “annus,” which
means year, and “versus,” which means returning. So this year on your
anniversary, return to the day of your wedding and all that led up to
it with a gift that will remind both you and your wife how much you
mean to each other.
